Educational-pastoral proposal in English

-        General information:

Getafe is a Spanish city located 13 kilometres to the south of Madrid. It is one of the more populated and industrialized municipalities of Madrid metropolitan area. The importance of this town also comes from its military air base, one of the oldest of Spain, the Hill of the Angels, considered the geographical centre of the Iberian Peninsula, and the University Carlos III whose main office is in the city.

Getafe’s proximity to Madrid propitiated a great industrial development along the XX century, increasing this way the population until 159.300 inhabitants, although thanks to its great net of factories and services it is a municipality on its own and avoided becoming a dormitory town, since a great proportion of its residents work or study in Getafe. Population's increment, and in a great majority they are immigrants, made increase the offer of public services and privately run institutions, and caused the creation of new neighbourhoods along the XX century.

The first Josephan community settled down in this city on September 1993. At the beginning their apostolic activity was centred in family homes for boys with family problems, and in the Adolescents Centre of Getafe Municipality.  At the present time the Josephan community is formed by three priests: Fr. Oscar Olmos, director of the community and president of the Murialdo Association, Fr. Rino Busolo and Fr. Juan José Molina.

The House of Getafe includes a great number of programs and activities of educational and social kind for children, teenagers, young and workers from the age of 6 until adulthood. In their majority they are children with school and family difficulties, socially maladjusted teenagers and who did not finish the compulsory Secondary School, foreign immigrants, many coming from the Arab world, and workers in unemployment with necessity of bring up-to-date their skills.

The management of the activities is carried out through the “Murialdo Association”, a no profit entity, created by the Congregation of St Joseph and approved by the Delegation of the Madrid Community Government on June 21, 1991. Its goal is to "promote solidarity and carry out specific actions within ambits and environments of marginalisation or poverty, above all in favour of children, adolescents and youth.”

The Directive Board of the Association is formed by a minimum of three Josephites and as many lay people.

The Association offers to its members and to the educators animation, formation and support from the Congregation of St Joseph (Josephites of Murialdo) that assumes the style and spirit of its founder St Leonard Murialdo.

The educational style of the Association in the realization of its activities is inspired by the Murialdine pedagogic tradition: centrality of the boy and the youth; education through experience and wholeness, with gradualism, giving the possibility that they experience responsibility; close presence and welcoming and integrative attitude of adult who shares his life with them; family lifestyle, valuing, by means of living together, the places and moments of daily life.

The Murialdo Association applies with its projects to the public administration’s convocations for grants to social and educational programs dedicated to underage youth with difficulties and workers. With the obtained grants the Association organizes the vocational training courses and other social-educational activities, hiring the teachers and educators. The Association also forms and coordinates the volunteers participating in the diverse activities.
